Philomela
Philomela String Quartet has been brought to life in 2022. We are professional musicians, music is our life. To sit together and play music means both joy and challenge to all four of us. It gives nonetheless unparalleled musical experience to anyone who would spend an hour with us. How? Let us show you!
Who we are
Name
Philomela, Greek mythology hero, princess of Athens. The name means: lover of the song. Gods have turned her into a nightingale, hence the bird’s Hungarian name. Nightingale is Hungary’s favorite songbird; it is capable of singing multiple voices simultaneously in the spring. Philomela means for us the past and future, history and nature, love and music in one.
NAME
Genesis
Music surrounds us. Lives in us. Even in the moment of birth we greet life with our singing. We always seek avidly after harmony, melody, music on the street, in the woods, in the sea… in reality and dream.
We spend our whole life with our instruments. But one rainy morning I woke up to a feeling of longing: longing to make music, harmony, even just to have a peaceful afternoon. I knew the solution in an instant… a few phone calls, and we started writing the story of the string quartet in words and thoughts - right away. We have everything we need: professional background, commitment, will. Respect and love of music and each other. So off we went! Since then we play chamber music together, represent and create the “Quartet revolution”, share the excitement of “House music”. We are four different musicians, yet we are able to create a harmonious atmosphere when we play together. Music is magic, a play with the senses, and that is exactly what we try to transfer with words, instruments, energy.
A concert is a gift for everybody, and a gift is a source of joy, novelty and surprise as well. Some know that already. And who does not know it yet, can always give it a try.
GENESIS
Mission
Our sounds, our harmonies have indeed arrived to us from above. Everything from tiny particles all the way to galaxies pursue harmony, calm, balance. The sound of the Universe speaks up in our hands and instruments every time we play together. And whoever is around, will be an active participant of this magic.
We believe in the creating, relaxing, touching and elevating power of music. This magic is much simpler and more natural than most people would think! Therefore we would like to reach to everybody who
- is not yet familiar with classical music
- thinks that it would not be their cup of tea; it would be boring and out of date
- would believe music to be a privilege of a different class or era
- would believe that classical music belongs to the stage and musicians are not from them
- would not prefer live music in their living room, regardless the kind of occasion
- would believe that live music would never be comparable to the spotless quality of studio recordings.
If some of the audience would return home after our concert with the feeling in their heart “Wow! I have never thought that chamber music could be so entertaining!”, or “It was surprisingly peaceful to step out from everyday’s routine for an hour”, then we would be certain that it was worth it to work hard on the quartet, to follow our leading star.
